The History of the Cat Fancy in Norway Text Lisbeth Falling
The start of the organized Cat Fancy in Norway took place in the 1930-ies. A very energic lady from Oslo, Haldis Rohllf, took her longhaired cat to an exhibition for animals, organized by a fur trader. The intention with this particular show was to find the best fur, also among cats, to make nice coats.
Haldis Rohllf didn't like this attitude. She wanted to establish a club for cat friends where cat shows could be arranged for a different purpose than making coats from their fur. And then "Kattevennenes Klubb" was founded. Twenty high class people from Oslo founded the first club, but after a while they started to disagree about cats as pets or pedigreed cats. Those who wanted to exhibit cats were not real cat friends, the cat lovers maintained.
Haldis Rohllf and her friends then decided to found a new club more in line with their great interest: the pedigreed cats. At that time, they had Persians, Siamesee, Europé, and the forerunner of today's forest cats. Then Norsk Rasekatt Klubb (NORAK) was founded in 1938.
Only one exhibition was held before the second world war, in october 1938. From then on, and during the 1940ies, we know very little about the organized cat fancy, with the exception of some pictures of celebrities with Persians or Siameses cats in newspapers and magazines. In the 1950ies the activity increased, and NORAK held annual shows in Olso, and some new clubs came in function as departments of NORAK.
NORAK became a member of FIFe in 1951, and in 1963 Norske Rasekattklubbers Riksforbund (NRR) was founded, then with three clubs. Now there were more breeds, like Abyssinians, Russian Blue, and more variants of Persians , as colourpoints.
The Cat Fancy expanded greatly during the next decades, many new clubs were founded, and today there are clubs all over Norway, from south to north - totally 25 clubs. Some important decisions in FIFe following the initiative of NRR: 1977: The Norwegian Forest Cat recognized 1981: Korat recognized 1990: The EMS-system, created by Eva Minde, was accepted
